Fingering

Recorde Hole NumbersThe image on the left shows the convention for numbering the ┬áholes/fingers for the recorder. We suggest you use this scheme if discussing fingering in our forum – eg alternative fingerings or trills.

Modern recorders are usually in one of two keys: F and C. The fingering systems are the same, but the notes produced are different. For instance, the lowest note with C-fingering is a C (eg descant), and on F-fingering is an F (eg treble).

The most common system is known as Modern, English or (Neo-)Baroque, but there is another less common one called German. There is also a little-used Historical fingering. Be sure you are all talking about the same system !
